There are added benefits to taking precautionary measures. A benefit to replacing outdated cables and receptacles is that you can add grounding wires and three-prong receptacles. Not only are they convenient, but grounding wires are also safer. Building codes in new construction now require ground-fault circuit interrupters and arc-fault circuit interrupters. Electrical Information

Electrical outlets can enhance chances of shock and electrical fire to consumers. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that 3,900 injuries associated with electrical receptacle outlets are treated in hospital emergency rooms each year. 1/3 of these injuries take place when children insert metal objects in to the outlet. This has resulted in electric shock and burn injuries. CPSC also estimates that electric receptacles are involved in 5,300 fires annually which claim 40 lives and injured 110 consumers.

If an outlet has poor internal contacts or loose wire terminals, it may become overheated and emit sparks. Even a receptacle with nothing plugged into it may run hot if it is passing current through to other outlets on the same circuit. Switch off your appliances before unplugging them from a receptacle to prevent damage to the outlet.
